Shoei has been able to offer some of the quietest helmets on the market. They have achieved this with an onsite wind tunnel for testing all their innovations in-house. The RF-1200 wind tunnel testing started at its earliest design stages to assure its streamlined design from the very beginning. Shoei was able to utilize this information and tweak the design to provide a flexible and compact shell. The RF-1200 has even become Shoei’s lightest Snell-certified full-face helmet.

The new shell’s reduction in wind noise allows the rider to listen better to the environment and also blocks out unwanted road noise from entering through the bottom with a new design to the helmet liner.

Key Features of the Shoei RF-1200 Solid Helmet

Aerodynamic, lightweight and compact design:

(Image depicting RF-1200 placed over RF-1100)

Ventilation Performance

Shoei RF-1200 Ventilation Performance Incorporated into the new design of the Rf-1200 shell is a remarkable set of vents. These vents have been tested in Shoei’s onsite wind tunnel facility and placed in all the prime locations to provide excellent airflow while keeping in the noise level to a minimum.

The larger chin vent offers three positions to moderate airflow and is easily adjusted even while wearing gloves.  A total of three upper air vents and four rear exhaust vents that are strategically placed near the top to allow the negative air flow behind the helmet to pull air through the helmets EPS liner at a higher rate providing a vast improvement to airflow for those hotter days.

Four Shell Sizes

Shoei RF-1200 Shell Sizes

One of the great features of the RF-1200 is the four shell sizes that vary in use from XSmall to XXLarge. This allows Shoei to provide a much more custom fit per size instead of solely relying on thinner or thicker foam pads to make up the difference.

Dual-Layer / Multi-Density EPS Liner

Shoei RF-1200 EPS Liner The EPS liner in the RF-1200 is a dual layer liner that is comprised of varying densities which provides protection in different degrees to specific points on your head.

The dual layer design has individual air channels integrated inside the liner, providing uncompromised airflow throughout the helmet. These channels are also crucial in assisting with the crumple zones during impact. Using a varying density EPS liner, Shoei was able to cut down on even more weight, making the helmet not only compact but lightweight as well.

CWR-1 Shield

Shoei RF-1200 Shield The newly designed CWR-1 face shield offers the rider a greater field of vision and their 3D injection-molding ensures an optically correct viewpoint in all directions and incorporates a 99% deflection of UV rays.

With the integration of a new rib design on the upper and lower edge, Shoei has provided more strength to the shield for instances such as opening and closing the shield; this improvement also eliminates bending due to wind forces at higher speeds.

An internal bead on the upper edge and sides prevents air and water from bleeding into the helmet creating a perfect seal for those rainy days. Assisting the RF-1200 in the fight against the wind is the improved base plate with included features like spring load to pull the shield securely to the helmet while in the closed position. The base plate offers manual adjustment with a 5 point adjusting dial.

Included with the CWR-1 Shield is a Pinlock® EVO Fog-Resistant System that is without a doubt one of the most effective methods in the fight against fog. The Pinlock® system installs with a one-step procedure for easy installation and replacement.

(Pinlock® systems are not intended for use while riding at night due to glare)

Shoei RF-1200 E.Q.R.S. After the RF-1200 does its job in protecting you in the event of an accident. One implemented feature that makes removing the helmet easier is the integration of the Emergency Quick Release System made famous by the VFX-W and X-Twelve models.

This system allows the cheek pads to be removed with ease making the opening wider for emergency personnel or first responders to remove the helmet without causing any undue stress or further injury to the neck.

3D Max-Dry System II Interior

Shoei RF-1200 3D Max-Dry System The 3D Max-Dry System II Interior that comes in the RF-1200 is washable, adjustable and fully removable for replacement. The comfort of this liner is due to the 3D technology Shoei uses to manufacturer them. The liner is designed for a fitment shaped for a riders head and has multiple cheek pad size options available for that perfect fit. This perfect fit system provides an ideal level of comfort while remaining secure for an interference-free riding experience at higher speeds.

The material used in the liners are specially designed to dissipate sweat twice as fast as conventional nylon liners.

Breath Guard

Shoei RF-1200 Breath Guard The included breath guard is a feature that can assist in preventing fog from building up on the shield. It is installed by inserting the clips into the upper edge of the chin bar. Once installed the breath guard assists in directing the wearers breath down away from the shield and towards to bottom of the helmet.

Note: If used in conjunction with Chin Curtain, the effect is not as noticeable since your breath has nowhere to escape.

Chin Curtain

Shoei RF-1200 Chin Curtain The RF-1200 offers, even more, wind noise and air reduction inside the helmet by attaching a chin curtain to the lower front end of the chin bar.

Q-RE Base Plate System

Shoei RF-1200 Base Plate System

The RF-1200 comes equipped with an updated Q-RE Base Plate System that offers a strengthened spring for a tighter seal against the windows dual-lip, dual layer bead further assisting the RF-1200’s air and water tight design every time you close the visor.

The new design provides expedited shield changes for ease of use. Much faster than previous models. A new enhancement is the all-new five position dialer that can be rotated into position for a tighter or looser fit based on your preferences.

Multi-Ply Matrix AIM+ Shell

Shoei RF-1200 Shell The construction of the RF-1200 shell uses a very lightweight combination of fiberglass and other organic fibers. This blend not only makes the RF-1200 very lightweight, but it is also a concoction that provides extreme overall strength with minimum materials allowing for a compact design. This shell has been Snell M2010 and DOT approved. All of these features provide a solid first defense for your noggin.

Ear Pads

Shoei RF-1200 Ear pads A great feature built into the RF-1200 is the inclusion of removable ear pads. So if you use a com system, installation is made easy and will fit your speakers with ease.

Shoei RF-1200 Warranty

5-Year Warranty From Purchase Date. 7-Year Warranty From Helmet Manufacture Date. Whichever comes first.

2nd best to Aria
Sucks to say this after using Shoei, Maruschin prior to Aria but here are my thoughts compared to something like the $150 more Defiant; buy the Aria for the 5 layers in the helmet EPS vs 2 layers in the Shoei. If your in the medium to large range, then opt for the 5 shell sizes vs 4 Shoei shell sizes - it matters. The next big issue is in ventilation - don't put air flow in your eyes thank you.

I remember breathing in my nose and blowing out my mouth with my Shoei's and had forgotten about fogging with the Arias. I still breathe that way but to relax. Keep in mind its about energy disbursement - I can tell you I feel less safe in this helmet because of the lack of layers in the EPS and the lack of hand built layering. I help create the first fiber carbon rackets in the market and we hand laid them - it matters. One more grip is the chin strap loosens too easily for my taste - something with the slipperyness of the chin strap material - I don't care about my finger force, I care about a the accident force loosening it.

What do I like; price? NO, it cheaper I get it (its cheaper for a reason). I like its lighter, does not handle the wind in all positions compared to the Aria, but is excellent in the tuck position, very good in 3/4 and very good in looking sideways compared to the Arai (not cheaper brands). It lacks a bit in turning and looking up, a bit more head movement at high speed 90-150+ but less than I thought with the air foil. Its stable at over 170, in tuck. Its got that part covered, but then we have to slow down, and pop up - that should be smoother.

The air foil is excellent in tuck and turn but smoothest in tuck vs heads up - everything gets bumpier heads up but its lighter weight helps offset the force of those movements so that your not more fatigued (compared to Aria) but less fatigued as long as you control your head position on long (180 miles) rides. So it is a limitation in that you have to control your head tilt vs you guessed it the Aria, but in tuck its controlled. I ride short/long/distance/speed so I do like to move my head more - so the criticism is as I like to be able move my body around and not pay a wind disturbance penalty when I'm looking to brake or initiate a turn. Bonus for less fatigue in tuck +

This helmet is better than HJC and others in the $300 range. You can tell this helmet is a step up. Know that.

I really like the shield - it is clear, easy to use and as nice incremental movement steps. You cannot mount a camera on the shield puck as its all shield. I'm OK with that, as it also keeps the noise down by design (on the other hand if there is no ventilation then...) and its a good looking design solution. So no mounting on the shield obviously - I like side mounted camera's so...lower?

I recommend for all its qualities to pay the $150 more for the higher end helmets knowing your head will be less damaged in an accident and you can ride fast without distraction. Its so important that your less distracted - you will be faster. Trust me. If you are moving up in the helmet world, know that your protected and that there are even more options. I can tell you that you do not always need your helmet but I can also tell you that I can write and function because of quality helmets. I don't ride slow and have a 95% chance of riding faster than you. You will never know its me, I only stop for gas. I'm that fat guy that passed you in full A.S. leathers LOL

Helmets and gear are key to riding fast which is why I mentioned wind in my eyes from the chin vents and head bucketing. I am the only one from my younger days that still rides and I am on my 3rd IAR zx10r (a weakness in preference?) Step it up on helmets - FIM standards.

Why did I buy this - two Arias dusted in 3 years with cameras is expensive (another conversation). I thought this would be a summer helmet (as I only had 1 month left) but is cools too little for my tastes - its good for spring and fall. I like the light weight. I went flat black with dark shield added and am happy with the setup.

I rate this helmet very good not excellent -better than I thought it would be but I feel less safe than the helmets I had before. I would definitely not go lower than this level of helmet. Do what I do and go solid and be creative with stickers and paint - It will save you money is more fun.

Love it so far
I’m a novice rider but wanted the best protection for my head. I’ve only been riding for a week but so far I live the comfort, style, and other aspects of this helmet besides the safety aspects, which are top notch

Love it!
It's light, and low wind noise. I land directly between a medium and large on the size chart. I opted to go with the large. It is still very snug, but not uncomfortable. Very happy with this helmet!

Comfortable but Noisy to a Fault.
First of al,l I would like to say, I get the comfort with this helmet on, like something I have never experienced before. There are some areas of improvements in this one too. However overall, it is a good alliance of comfort and safety. To conclude some key points here, I would like to let you know:

On the positive side

It is the light weight and easy fit which make it priceless.
For someone who wants it for regular use, it is a decent wear.
The Aeromechanics an added coverage with the light weight makes it an all time desirable helmet for riders.
The soft padding on the inside makes one feel quite at ease.

On the other end
-Noisiness of the wind clashing itself against the ear drums can actually take over the comfort this helmet offers. It is indeed noisy, to be honest. Good for regular speeding though.
-Somehow the noise can be let out by keeping the wind shield open but then, the wind is ready to slap your face and block your nose while trying to escape it. Either way it is a good torture if you happen to speed up in extreme temperatures.
-If the Shoei designers make little changes to the design of their RF-1200 to lessen the noise directly aimed at ear drums, it would be greatly enhance the user experience. Until then, it is good for regular wear.

Awesome must for riding!
Talking about the level of enthusiasm this helmet builds in me before a ride, I think this is a must have for rider who knows safety is crucial.

-The aerodynamics ensures an awesome experience in addition to the good visibility aspect in this full-cover helmet.

- Also, there is a little wind resistance at high speeds which add to the brownie points. The pinlock anti-fog shield makes me count on it for relatively less disturbance because of bad weather.

-The helmet has a matte finish which makes it look spotless.

It has been over five weeks that I have been using this one and honestly, I feel my ride is incomplete without it. I thought that it was just me in love with my RF-1200 but last week one of my closest pals borrowed it and can’t stop thanking me for letting him have an amazing experience too. Which made me come back and review it for the future users: Go for it!
